Figure Drawing at Artist’s Edge

Figure Drawing at Artist's Edge

On Thursday nights in Poulsbo Derek Gundy has a live model come into the Artist’s Edge and we all have the opportunity to spend three hours drawing the model of the evening. Sara is a wonderful model and hold her pose perfectly. I am usually lucky enough to have one or two of my drawings be presentable enough to post.

I love the environment of other artists of all different levels of ability having a great time working on their skills.

There is is always room for more artists as generally only about 8 show up on any given night and there is room for at least 12. come join us!!

Line work can make or break a drawing. We all need to draw more. I have heard and read more artists say your painting is only as good as your drawing. I try to draw something every day, so my line work hopefully improves over time.

At Almost Candid Gallery in Kingston, the owner decided that February would be a good month for a Nude show, so have done a couple of little 5 x 7 pastel drawings.

Blue or Yellow

Blue or Yellow

When I was younger for some reason I decided I really didn’t love blue or yellow, but as I have grown my art in my life I notice those two colors appear in my work more and more.

Ever wonder what attracts us to certain shades or tones and what ones do we not venture toward.

Purple and olive green always catch my attention in clothing stores, but looking at art my eyes don’t toward any particular color just beautiful composition and talent.

What catches your eye? What is your favorite color and do you know why?

Degas and the Dancers

One of my friends posted this beautiful video on his blogspot and I thought I might share it with my fiends and followers. Degas work in figure, form and color is amazing and delightful. So many of us would like to be able to emulate the emotions he expressed in his artwork. He was obsessed with ballerinas and in watching this you can see why, with grace mobility they make the dance look elegant and simple.

The Pastel world is a whole new adventure for me.  For any artist it s good to expand your horizons and try new things.  Sometimes you will be successful and other times walk away at the end of the day wondering about the experience.

What we need to know is that every artist has an opinion about art and we don’t necessarily have to tie into or agree with that opinion. An educated artist, which many of us are, does not immediately agree or disagree with another artists philosophy, for that is what it is.  It is their world and possibly not yours.

Each and everyone of us has a valuable opinion and when we take classes we need to realize the instructor is only a venue for us to view things from his or her perspective, give a new or different slant on our knowledge, acknowledge their expertise and realize we may view the world through entirely different eyes.

Creativity is subtraction, but you chose to subtract may be different from anyone else. I once read that nothing is more paralyzing than the idea of limitless possibilities. Constraints or limits sometimes help us create.

Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat with only 236 different words.  His editor challenged him he couldn’t write a book with only 50 different words.  He won by writing Green Eggs and Ham, one of the bestselling books of all times.

“Telling yourself you have all the time in the world, all the money in the world, all the colors in the palette, anything you want – that just kills creativity.”
